Unlike Italo or early House, also firmly in the Kraftwerk/Moroder continuum, Freestyle was a self-consciously “teenage” expression. Schoolyard gossip, hot boys with Camaros, “no…you hang up” phonecalls, pro nails and wet-look perms, homework and Hot 103, Slater from Saved By The Bell, Saturdays at the mall…all that. If it’s OK to like Italo and Hi-NRG now, then there is absolutely no fucking problem with getting a musical hard-on listening to what basically open-shirted Latin teen idols fronting Cybotron (no homo!).
