Two takes on Hayes‘ unusually breezy Blaxploitation theme ‘Hung Up On My Baby’. His original is pent-up hood funk in recline – in the park and shaded by trees, mildly stoned, satisfied but still hungry. The Geto Boys lace the low-end and make a last grasp at manning-up, but now even the sunshine of the beat can’t be trusted…it melts away everything but the ghosts creeping in corners. Meanwhile back in New Orleans, Glass Candy put an old Mardi Gras folk song full of child-like brag and rhyme through an echo chamber. The carnival-goers slip away as it gets dark…‘Iko Iko’ is the sound of the party moving indoors after a long day - heavy breathed disco slink, headnods and handclaps at half-speed. No one is going home yet.
